Weeknight Crunch: Air-Fried Onion Rings

Quick to prep and impossibly crunchy, these air-fryer onion rings deliver deep-fried texture without the fuss or oil bath.

Sometimes you want the comfort of a golden, crackly onion ring without hauling out a pot of hot oil — and that’s exactly where this recipe shines. With just 15 minutes of prep and about 14 minutes in the air fryer, you get wide, half-inch rings that stay tender inside and blister to a perfect crisp on the outside. It’s the kind of thing you can throw together between setting a salad and flipping a burger.

The texture comes from a three-part coating: a seasoned flour base with baking powder for lift, an egg-and-milk wash to help everything stick, and a crunchy finish of fine cornmeal mixed with panko. The cornmeal gives a little sandy bite that contrasts beautifully with the airy crunch of panko, while smoked paprika, garlic powder, and a touch of cayenne add warmth and a savory edge that’s more interesting than plain salt-and-pepper.

A few small practical notes make a big difference: slice the onion into 1/2-inch rings and separate them carefully so each ring gets an even coating; preheat your air fryer to 400°F for 3–5 minutes and lightly brush or spray the basket so nothing sticks; don’t overcrowd the basket — a single layer crisps best. A light spray of oil over the tops before cooking helps them brown without turning greasy.

These are great for weeknight dinners and party snacking alike. You can bread the rings ahead and keep them chilled for an hour or two, then air-fry straight from the fridge (add a minute or two to the cook time if needed). Serve with ketchup, a lemony aioli, or whatever dip your weeknight mood calls for — they’re forgiving, fast, and reliably crunchy every time.

How to Make Air Fryer Onion Rings

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes while you prepare the rings; lightly brush or spray the basket with oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Peel the onions and slice into 1/2-inch rings; separate into individual rings and set aside.
  3. In a shallow bowl combine the flour, baking powder, 1/2 tsp kosher salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne; toss to blend.
  4. In a second bowl whisk the eggs with the milk until smooth.
  5. In a third shallow bowl mix the panko, cornmeal, remaining 1/2 tsp kosher salt and remaining 1/4 tsp black pepper; drizzle in the olive oil and toss so the crumbs are evenly moistened.
  6. Working in batches, dredge each onion ring in the seasoned flour (shake off excess), dip into the egg wash, then press into the panko-cornmeal mixture to coat thoroughly. Place coated rings on a plate or tray in a single layer.
  7. Arrange a single layer of rings in the air fryer basket (do not overcrowd; you will likely need 2 batches). Lightly brush or spray the tops with a little extra olive oil and cook at 400°F for 4–6 minutes, then flip rings, brush again and cook 3–4 more minutes until golden and crisp.
  8. Transfer cooked rings to a wire rack for a minute to keep them crisp, repeat with remaining rings, and serve immediately with your favorite dip (ketchup, spicy mayo, or ranch).
