Blistered Lemon-Garlic Asparagus, Fast from the Air Fryer

A 10-minute shortcut to bright, crisp-tender asparagus that adds instant polish to any weeknight meal.

If you want a side that feels special but comes together in the time it takes to finish the main, this is it. The air fryer gives asparagus those slightly charred tips and a snap that roasting can take longer to coax out — all with almost no hands-on babysitting and minimal cleanup.

The flavor is simple but punchy: olive oil, lemon zest and juice, minced garlic, a pinch of red pepper flakes, salt and black pepper. Tossed with that bright dressing they get a glossy coating that crisps in the heat; a shower of Parmesan at the end brings a toasty, salty finish that melts into the tips without stealing the spotlight.

A couple of technique notes that make the difference: bend or trim off the woody ends (about 1–1.5 inches), pat the spears dry so they brown instead of steam, and spread them in a single layer in the basket. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for a few minutes and plan on about 9 minutes — thinner spears need less time, thicker ones a touch more.

Serve these with simply grilled chicken, a pan-seared fish, or tossed into warm pasta or grains for a quick vegetarian dinner. Leftovers re-crisp beautifully in the air fryer or toaster oven, so you can prep the spears ahead — dress them just before cooking for the best texture.

Ingredients

How to Make Air Fryer Asparagus

  1. Trim woody ends from the asparagus by bending each stalk near the base or cutting about 1–1.5 inches off; pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Zest half the lemon and then juice the whole lemon into a small bowl; mince the garlic and whisk together with the olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  3. Place the asparagus in a large bowl or on a rimmed sheet and toss with the dressing until evenly coated.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes.
  5. Arrange the asparagus in a single layer in the air fryer basket (it’s okay if ends overlap slightly); cook for 7–9 minutes depending on thickness, shaking the basket or turning the spears once halfway through.
  6. A minute before they finish, sprinkle the grated Parmesan evenly over the asparagus so it warms and sticks to the spears.
  7. Remove the asparagus, taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper if needed, and finish with an extra squeeze of lemon juice and a light sprinkle of lemon zest for brightness.
  8. Serve immediately as a side or on top of grains or proteins; leftovers keep 2–3 days refrigerated and re-crisp well for a few minutes in the air fryer.
